Intervju: Slim Cessna’s Auto Club
3 srpnja, 2023.

*ENGLISH BELLOW

Pitanja postavljao: Jura Petrović
Odgovarao: Munly J Munly

Dolazimo u miru.

Često vas svrstavaju u kategoriju “gothic countryja”.

(“This Is How We Do Things in the Country” je savršen primjer)

Vas dvojica (Munly i Slim) često ste u interakciji jedan s drugim i s publikom kada svirate uživo.

Nije produktivno kad previše ljudi govori “Pojačaj me!”.

Čekaj, jel to sve? Imam još puno toga za re…Zapamtite, Ovo Su Moje Planine-Tako To Može Biti.

Questions: Jura Petrović
Answers: Munly J Munly

This will be your third time in Croatia (Munly’s fourth), do you have any memories from your previous shows here, and what can we expect from SCAC this time since it’s been 5 years since your last show?
Any memories? You seem to remember better than myself. I had no idea we had that we had visited Croatia this many times. Though, I do remember the cats rubbing on my legs. It was a bit forward of them. They did not even ask if it would be all right if they rubbed upon me. A perplexing question are cats. What can you expect? I find it best to never have expectations. People are people and will perpetually let you down. That being said, I expect the best from ourselves in every aspect of our lives. Hopefully our discipline will meet Croatian expectations. I do remember once having to correct someone who called me Jay. My name is Munly J Munly—I was born this way. It is on my baptismal papers and every paper afterward. Getting misinformation from Google or Wikipedia does not make it correct.

Do you notice any differences in the reception from the European and the U.S. crowds?
That seems a bit of a loaded question. I try not to differentiate between locations, be it Mexico City, Butte, or Moscow. We are musicians and artists, we exist in a left leaning world. Proudly. Those who come to see us usually tend to have similar lifestyles no matter where they might reside within the world. Of course there are outliers and we welcome ‘Most’ everyone. We come in peace.

You’ve often been lumped into the “gothic country” category. How do you feel about that label, how would you categorize your music, and since you’re a band that combines rock instruments with more traditional ones such as the banjo and dulcimer do you think that your music defies categorization?
I would not categorize what we do. What type of Jackass would be so egotistical? Speaking of Jackassery…hopefully when we pass there will be a category named for us. Then the accused bands will be offended and say that they want nothing to do with such a Jackass as Munly The Cunt.

The characters of your stories are generally not the people you’d want to meet in real life, how do you come up with such dark and twisted characters, why are they so prevalent in your music, and how do you manage to make songs with such dark themes so danceable? (“This Is How We Do Things in the Country” is a perfect example of this)
My characters dont speak of me so I dont feel right speaking behind their backs. As far as the songs…hopefully people can decipher that there are usually multiple layers and varied levels within each song, which also might merge with other songs and stories and their characters. Yet, if people dont want to give that much effort and would prefer just to bop their head along, hopefully the music and melodies can stand on their own as well. For myself, I cannot put something out with any type of filler. Speaking of fillers…fillers are one of the leading causes of obesity in cats. So, stories=good, filler=bad.

You’re quite known for your incredibly energetic live shows. As you’ve been called the “best live band in the world” by many, does that put pressure on you to give it your all every single show or does that come naturally?
Well, that is flattering, however I would question the taste of the person who might have said this. I will not speak for everyone; for myself…the self is the harshest critic. My guilt would hang me if I went out and gave people filler. We have such an easy life. It would be anathema to shortchange anyone who would pay their own hard earned money to come see us jump around like Fhy. If that happens to anyone please feel free to come speak with me after any show and I will personally refund your money; that goes for books or music or anything else you might purchase that we produce.

The two of you (Munly and Slim) often interact with each other and the crowd when playing live, there surely has been some funny moments during those performances, would you care to share one?

My headmaster always said I had an issue with sharing. I have many flaws yet this is an extremely ugly one. The biggest offenders of this are usually only children. I was not an only child. I had an extremely over privileged childhood. My parents paid for me to go to school, travel and play competitive sports. So, I am selfish. I do not blame them. It is my fault that I have this defect. I hope one day to find a cure for this and my myriad maladies.

You’ve been a band for 30 years now, how has your approach in writing music changed throughout the years since you had quite a few lineup changes?

Nothing has changed for myself. Which is most likely why we have gone through so many people. I am bullheaded with my writing. I do not collaborate. We have tried it and it does not work. My writing is my only decent attribute…so we put it to use for what we do. As we have learned to do with everyone’s strengths. Dwight has become accomplished at mixing and the technical side of recording that makes me roll my one eye. Slim has taught himself more of the business excrement which would make me roll my other eye if I had it, including social media; which I predict will one day looked back upon as we look at smoking now. Everyone contributes where they are suited: Rebecca, Andrew, and even George—Slim’s son—is beginning to figure out that we do not lead by telling people what to do but we teach and lead by example.

Your last album was the first SCAC album that you’ve released on your own label. How was the process different from your previous albums and what have you learned from it?

I believe we have released a few albums, however you might know that side more than myself. It was no different for myself. I did my parts and then got out of the way. To have too many people saying: Turn me up is not productive. Yes, I should be more involved in the product after it is written, but, they trust me to write passable stories so I need to do the same in kind and trust in my chosen family and this family that can tolerate all my behaviors.

Wait, I just realized that was all. That never happens. This was too quick. I was just getting warmed up. There is so much more that I want to sa…Remember, Those Are My Mountains—So Mote It Be.
